Vosges Haut Chocolat Bars

June 21, 2010

Several months ago, I wrote a blog post about Vosges Haut Chocolat after trying their caramel toffee marshmallow. Their website is full of luxury chocolates with some unusual flavors. They have an entire section devoted to bacon and chocolate. Strolling through Whole Foods one day I came across a table full of these mini Vosges candy bars. I’m pretty sure I stopped right in my tracks, mouth open, like I had just stumbled upon greatness. (If the marshmallows had been there, I would have!) I’ve been dying to order more chocolate, but wasn’t quite brave enough to step into their world of unique tastes. I was more than happy to find these to sample, right here in Nashville. I picked three flavors, but they have several more varieties.

So, how’s it taste?

We’ll start with the Mo’s Dark Bacon Bar. From the picture on the box, I was expecting a full slice of bacon in the bar, but it’s actually teeny chunks of bacon. It’s only in the aftertaste did I get a hint of it. The bacon pieces really just add a touch of saltiness and lately I’ve come to love the combination of salt and chocolate. Their dark was a little too bitter for me, but the bar wasn’t bad. Next up is the Woolloomooloo Bar. This bar has roasted and salted macadamia nuts, coconut, and hemp seeds in a milk chocolate base. This bar was pretty good, as I’m a sucker for chocolate + nuts + coconut, but I could have done without the hemp seeds. The hemp left an herbal aftertaste that just didn’t pair well with the rest of the ingredients. Call me old-fashioned, but this one was too exotic for me. Last is the Black Pearl Bar. Ginger, wasabi, and black sesame seeds in dark chocolate. I was expecting this bar to be spicy hot but was pleasantly surprised when it was just a subtle hint. I could smell the ginger before I even opened the wrapping and was worried it would overpower the chocolate. The first bite I was apprehensive, but then all the flavors came together very well. A nice crunch from the sesame seeds and a bit of warmth at the end. I liked that one the best of the three.

Hi Kelli! Thank you so much for the nice compliment! I was super excited to find Vosges at Whole Foods. They just had the mini bars when I went, but I'm hoping they carry some other items soon…especially those marshmallows!
